Notable Drake University Basketball Players

As you watch the Bulldogs take on the competition, keep in mind that you could be catching a glimpse of the next NBA legend or international sports star. Drake University has fostered its share of immense talent, including these players who have transitioned from the college courts to the professional leagues:

  • McCoy McLemore (1958–1961): A First-Team All-MVC power forward/center, McLemore helped lead Drake to a co-conference championship before being selected by the Warriors in 1964. In 1966, he entered the expansion draft and was chosen by the Chicago Bulls. Eventually, he found himself with the Milwaukee Bucks where he got to experience an NBA championship in 1971.

  • Willie Wise (1966–1969): Wise caught the attention of the Los Angeles Stars in 1969. He quickly made an impact, helping the team win the 1971 ABA Championship. His performance earned him recognition by Sports Illustrated as "the best two-way performer in pro basketball." He was a multi-year All-Star before his career unfortunately ended too soon due to a knee injury.

  • Willie McCarter (1966–1969): McCarter was renowned for his scoring ability, averaging 19.9 ppg while at Drake, where he helped lead the Bulldogs to a Final Four appearance. Drafted 12th by Los Angeles in 1969, he enjoyed a brief career with the Lakers and Trail Blazers before retiring. He went on to coach the Harper Creek High School team while playing in the CBA.

  • Jeff Halliburton (1969–1971): In two seasons with the Bulldogs, Halliburton left his mark, leading Drake to consecutive NCAA Tournament Regional Finals and earning MVC Player of the Year honors. His skills as a shooting guard got him drafted by the Atlanta Hawks in 1981, but he was subsequently traded to the Philadelphia 76ers, where he spent the remainder of his career.

  • Lewis Lloyd (1979–1981): Nicknamed "Black Magic" for his captivating play in high school, Lloyd dazzled at Drake with averages of over 30 points and 15 rebounds per game. The two-time MVC Player of the Year was initially selected by the GS Warriors in the 1981 NBA Draft, but he became a staple for the Houston Rockets, playing a major role in the team’s 1986 finals run.
