About Nicki Minaj

Onika Tanya Maraj-Petty was born in Trinidad and raised in the New York borough of Queens. As a child, she developed a practice of developing elaborate fantasies to disassociate from her tumultuous life. Over time, she adopted the moniker Nicki Minaj and added writing to her repertoire, penning her first rap by age 12. At the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, she was able to develop her talents, and by the time she reached adulthood, she was providing backup vocals for aspiring rappers in the Big Apple.

While posting her work to MySpace, she began corresponding with Fendi, the CEO of Dirty Money Records, who signed her to the Brooklyn label. An appearance in The Come Up, a DVD series centered on the road to fame, put her on the same path as Lil Wayne, who was also a rising star in New York City. The talented artists forged a friendship, and Minaj featured Wayne on her mixtapes Playtime Is Over (2007), Sucka Free (2008), and Beam Me Up Scotty (2009). He soon signed her to his label, Young Money Entertainment.

Her first solo single, “Your Love,” peaked at number 14 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and topped the Hot Rap Songs chart, catapulting the young phenom into the mainstream. Her debut studio album, Pink Friday, was released in 2010 and shot to the top spot on the Billboard 200. “Super Bass,” the album’s fifth track, made her an international superstar and a household name. She has since sold well over 100 million records and has had dozens of Top Ten hits. Her trailblazing status is reinforced by numerous awards, including AMAs, MTV VMAs, BET Awards, and Grammys.
