The History of University of Cincinnati Football

Although the University of Cincinnati is best known for its NCAA Division I basketball achievements, the school’s gridiron gang has made a name for itself as well. From their early beginnings to their recent successes, the UC Bearcats have seen many remarkable moments.

The first titles won by this team were way back in 1933 and 1934, when they played as part of the Buckeye Athletic Association. This set the stage for future triumphs, like the 1947 Sun Bowl, when the Cats beat Virginia Tech on an ironically frosty Kidd Field in El Paso. It was the culmination of an 8-2 season that saw UC beating tough teams like Indiana University, Michigan State, and Ohio University.

In 1949, Hall of Fame coach Sid Gillman took over the team, and he saw his squad go 50-13-1 during a tenure that lasted until 1954. His staff included greats like George Allen, Don Coryell, Al Davis, Chuck Knox, Chuck Noll, and Dick Vermeil.

1953 was a magical season! That was the year the Bearcats became one of the most dominant teams in the history of college football. They ended the year with a 9-1 record, claimed the title of the nation’s best offense, and had the top-ranked defense. Then, Cincy won back-to-back Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) championships in 1963 and 1964.

Since the turn of the 21st century, supporters have seen Cincy clinch back-to-back Big East championships and make a memorable appearance in the Sugar Bowl. Today, Bearcats Football continues to stand tall in the college football landscape, where they have transitioned to the Big 12.
