The History of San Jose Sharks Hockey

Known for their fast-paced, offensive-minded style of play, the Sharks have been a staple of the NHL since their inaugural season in 1991. The club was born out of a desire to bring NHL hockey to California's Bay Area.

In 1990, a group of investors led by George Gund III was awarded an expansion franchise, and the Sharks were officially born. The team's name was chosen through a fan contest, and the iconic shark logo was designed by Tom Kelly, who also designed the logos for the Toronto Blue Jays and the Baltimore Orioles.

As is often the case, the early years were marked by struggles, but the team gradually gained respectability. In 1994, they made their first playoff appearance, and in 2004, they reached the Conference Finals for the first time.

The squad continued to make postseason appearances throughout the 2000s and 2010s, establishing itself as one of the most consistent teams in the NHL. Then, in 2016, they made a Stanley Cup Finals run but again came up just short. Despite the ultimate prize slipping through their fingertips, they continue to fight for the ultimate prize and are committed to bringing the trophy to the Capital of Silicon Valley.

The Sharks NHL Schedule

Before you buy your Sharks tickets, you’ll need to check the official schedule so you can pick an opponent likely to give you the kind of showdown you want. Rivalries are a great place to start, and the Kings have been a thorn in San Jose’s side since they first met. These teams have met in the playoffs several times, including a memorable seven-game series in 2014.

The Anaheim Ducks are high on the list of adversaries as well. Any intrastate teams play with bragging rights on the line, which adds an extra element to the competition. And last but not least in the Pacific Division, the Oilers and Sharks have a long history of close games and playoff battles.

In the Central Division of the Western Conference, encounters with the Golden Knights and Colorado Avalanche are intriguing, and in the Eastern Conference, the Pittsburgh Penguins would love to snatch Stanley Cup glory from San Jose again.

SAP Center Information

Aside from serving as the site of Sharks NHL home games, the SAP Center is home to the American Hockey League’s San Jose Barracuda. Additionally, the venue offers Disney on Ice, concerts, comedy shows, and more.

Seating

With a seating capacity of approximately 17,500 for hockey, the SAP Center offers accommodations to suit a multitude of guest preferences. Sections behind the player benches provide fantastic views of the on-ice and behind-the-scenes action. The home team takes their place in front of Section 128 while the visiting team congregates closer to Section 102.

The penalty box is in front of Section 115, but Sections 107–109 are known for their vantage point from behind the net. The Sharks shoot twice on this side of the ice. Still, families sometimes prefer Sections 110–112 in the lower level corner, mostly due to their proximity to the concourse and a nearby ice cream stand.
